There is no more important duty at Goodyear Airship Operations than to make certain that the blimp's systems are in top condition for safe operation. The Chief Mechanic and Rigger (CM&R) must hold Inspection Authorization and Airframe and Power Plant Certifications. The CM&R supervises a department of airship mechanics and performs maintenance and repairs of the airship on a daily basis as needed. This includes the airframe and power plant, envelope and cabling. Supervision and performance of rigging duties include testing fabric integrity at routine intervals, re-cabling flight controls when needed, decaling and painting.
Supervision and maintenance on the power plant includes routine engine inspections to evaluate performance and adjust as needed. The CM&R must maintain proper records of all required maintenance and repair logs pertaining to the airship as required by company policy and FAA regulations. Bi-annually the Goodyear blimps undergo a 2-4 week inspection and overhaul, which the CM&R is primarily responsible for supervising.
On airship maintenance issues the CM&R reports directly to the PIC/APIC on a daily basis.
