The Goodyear blimp has a number of electronic systems that require monitoring, maintenance and occasional updates. The Chief Electronic Technician (CET) must hold a current FCC General License (GROL) and usually has a strong technical background with the ability to understand engineering drawings and blueprints. The CET supervises a department of electronic technicians that work with communications and navigation equipment, radar, power generation, electrical systems and all wiring systems in the airship. Among these duties are to install, repair and maintain the high definition microwave television equipment used in the airship and on the ground for telecasts in which the blimp is involved. Other areas include the electronic sign system, which incorporates message programming and LED board maintenance. In addition, the CET supervises or performs maintenance on all wiring and electrical systems for the ground support equipment.
The Goodyear blimps provide some of the most coveted television views in the sports, news and entertainment industries. The camera work is done by technicians within the Goodyear blimp operation. To satisfy the high standards of network television, it is required that a superior level of technical and creative talent be cultivated and maintained. The Chief Electronic Technician is responsible for the training and scheduling of each airship camera operator.
The CET reports to the PIC on issues related to the maintenance and upkeep of the electronic and camera systems as well as personnel training and execution of network television operations.
