Blimp christenings traditionally have been high visibility events. Famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart (holding beaker) christened the Defender in 1929 at the National Air Races in Cleveland. Eight years later, Miss Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared in the South Pacific during an attempt to fly around the globe near the equator.
